From quiet town to headline market

De Soto spent most of its history as a small community on the western edge of Johnson County. Panasonic’s 4.7-million-square-foot battery plant — which opened in July 2025 and employs roughly 1,800 people, with a second wing expected online in 2027 — changed the trajectory. In 2026 the company announced it would also make batteries for AI data centers as part of a multibillion-dollar investment through the end of the decade.

Local officials have described the moment as a ‘generation’s worth of improvements’ arriving at once — roads, infrastructure, services, and housing all expanding together.

What growth means for homeowners

Sustained employment investment tends to support housing demand over time, and De Soto is planning around it rather than reacting — expanding infrastructure and services ahead of the population curve, which is generally a healthy sign for long-term homeowners. For buyers, it means an active new-construction market alongside established streets that rarely turn over.

Keeping perspective

Big projects also come with uncertainty — employment ramps can move with demand, and timelines shift. The signal that matters for homeowners isn’t any single job number; it’s the pattern of long-term investment and a town building for the future. That pattern in De Soto is clear.
