What’s new in USD 512
Rebuilt Tomahawk Elementary opens
Students started the 2025-26 year on Aug. 11, 2025, in a new $25 million Tomahawk Elementary at 6301 W. 78th St. in Overland Park. It is the last of five elementary rebuilds funded by the $264 million bond voters approved in 2021.
District outlines timeline for a possible 2027 bond
At a March 23, 2026 board presentation, staff laid out a timeline with a draft bond resolution in late summer, a board vote set for Nov. 9, 2026, and a possible mail-ballot election on March 2, 2027. The superintendent said the goal is no mill levy increase for the bond.
Ground broken on new Early Childhood Education Center
SMSD broke ground on a new Early Childhood Education Center, funded with remaining authorization from the 2021 bond. The district expects it to open to students and families in 2027.
District launches elementary boundary study
Citing projected enrollment declines, SMSD and consultant RSP & Associates began a boundary study that set a 300-student floor and 575-student ceiling for elementary buildings. The study was planned ahead of a potential bond referendum.
Boundary work paused; East Antioch closure plan tabled
On Sept. 15, 2026, the district paused its boundary work group, canceled public input sessions on 2027-28 elementary boundaries, and tabled a recommendation to close East Antioch Elementary for the 2031-32 school year. A revised list of facility needs was scheduled to go to the board Oct. 12, 2026.
