Shrinking slowly, and saying so out loud

The district’s own count runs 26,706 in 2019 to 26,016 in 2026, with kindergarten at a ten-year low in 2025–26. Its stated reasons are the same three you hear across northeast Johnson County: lower birth rates, limited affordable housing, and less immigration along the I-35 corridor. The district projects another 538 students gone by 2035–36, almost all of them elementary-age. In April 2026 the board heard that the drop cost about $4 million in funding, and that $6.5 million in staffing requests and a $3 million plan for elementary mental-health counselors would go unfunded for 2026–27.

That is the backdrop for the boundary study. RSP & Associates is drawing new elementary lines against two benchmarks — no school under 300 students, none over 575 — and three buildings are projected under the floor for five straight years: Santa Fe Trail (1953), Highlands, and East Antioch (1958). On August 26, 2026 the administration recommended closing East Antioch in fall 2031 and folding it into a rebuilt Santa Fe Trail about a mile and a half away. Public input sessions run September 28–29 and October 5–6; the board decides October 26. If you are buying in the East Antioch or Santa Fe Trail attendance areas this fall, buy knowing the elementary assignment could change.

Three bonds in twelve years

The 2025 mill levy is 50.886 mills (20.0 general, 15.435 local option, 8.0 capital outlay, 7.451 bond), which the district describes as the lowest of the Johnson County districts. Whether it stays that way depends on the March vote.

What the programs actually are

International Baccalaureate is the district’s distinguishing offer — SM East has been an IB World School since 1994 and SM Northwest since 2008, and Shawnee Mission says it is the only Johnson County district with the program. The Signature Programs at the Center for Academic Achievement (8200 W. 71st Street, Overland Park) are half-day, application-based tracks open to students from every high school: Animation & Interactive Media, Biotechnology, Culinary Arts & Hospitality (the student-run Broadmoor Bistro), Engineering (Project Lead the Way), Medical Health Science with a CNA credential, and Urban Agriculture & Sustainability on the Broadmoor Urban Farm. Project Blue Eagle covers law enforcement, fire, EMT and legal careers at the career-tech campus. Dual credit runs through Johnson County Community College’s College Now program at all five high schools and the CAA. Languages offered include Spanish, French, German and Latin; there is no K–12 dual-language immersion program yet — the 2024–29 strategic plan lists it as something to explore.

Roesland Elementary was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2023.

Special services

The district describes in-class collaborative support, elementary resource rooms and co-taught secondary classes; center-based programs for autism, emotional, intellectual and severe/multiple disabilities; Arrowhead Day School for therapeutic placements; a Post-High Program for ages 18–21 plus Project SEARCH; transition planning from 14; and speech, OT/PT, vision and hearing services. Gifted education is SEEK, K–12, with elementary gifted centers by feeder area. Early childhood — pre-K, early-childhood special education with peer models, and Parents as Teachers — runs from the Early Childhood Education Center at 6701 W. 83rd Street; its replacement broke ground in May 2026 and opens in 2027.

Stated as what the district provides. Whether a particular service fits a particular child is a conversation for the district’s special education office.

The boundary quirk — fourteen cities, three seams

Shawnee Mission serves all or part of fourteen municipalities: Countryside, Fairway, Leawood, Lenexa, Merriam, Mission, Mission Hills, Mission Woods, Overland Park, Prairie Village, Roeland Park, Shawnee, Westwood and Westwood Hills. Three seams trip buyers up. Leawood and Overland Park are split with Blue Valley USD 229 — north is Shawnee Mission, south is Blue Valley, and the line runs roughly along I-435 but not exactly. Shawnee is mostly De Soto USD 232 (about 60%) and Lenexa mostly De Soto too (about 40% Shawnee Mission), so a Shawnee or Lenexa address tells you nothing about the district. The county’s School Finder, linked from the district’s boundary-maps page, is the only reliable answer for a specific address.
