Questions

Status note, updated September 5, 2026. Olathe USD 233 has recommended closing six buildings effective the 2027–28 school year, and attendance boundaries district-wide are being redrawn. No board vote has happened yet. Details and dates are below — confirm the assigned schools for any specific address directly with the district.

What actually makes Olathe schools different

Most agent sites will tell you a district is “great” and leave it there. That is not useful, and it is not something we are allowed to say anyway. Here is the concrete version: Olathe runs a three-tier career education structure, and it is genuinely unusual for a district this size.

Tier 1 — Career Pathways, at all five high schools

No application, no transfer. Business Management & Entrepreneurship · Construction & Design · Family, Community & Consumer Services · Fashion, Apparel & Interior Design · Marketing · Media Design & Communications · Programming & Software Development · Restaurant & Event Management.

Tier 2 — the 21st Century Academies

Students apply into a four-year, career-focused academy hosted at a specific high school and transfer there for that curriculum. The program passed its twentieth year in 2022 and enrolls roughly a quarter of all Olathe high school students.

Olathe NorthAnimal Health · Distinguished Scholars · Geoscience · Medical Professions · Sports Medicine & Exercise Science
Olathe SouthBioMedical Engineering · Business Finance · Computer Science
Olathe EastCivic Leadership · Design · Future Educators
Olathe Northweste-Communication · Engineering
Olathe WestGreen Tech · Public Safety

Two worth calling out. The Civic Leadership Academy at Olathe East is the law-and-government track — civil and criminal law, ethics in legal decision-making, work-based learning with community and political leaders, and a senior capstone that earns a transcript endorsement. And Green Tech at Olathe West is the only academy in the program powered entirely by renewable energy. Public Safety, also at West, partners with the Olathe Police Department, Olathe Fire Department, and the FBI Kansas City field office.

Tier 3 — two-year academies, juniors and seniors

Students keep core classes at their home high school and travel to one of two centers for three hours of the school day.

Olathe Advanced Technical Center (OATC): Automotive Technology · Welding Technology

Olathe Public Schools Innovation Campus (OPSIC): Animal Science & Research · Construction Technology · Culinary Arts · Electronics and Avionics · Emergency Medical Services · Healthcare Science

Yes, there is a real auto shop. There is also an avionics program, which is rare enough for a metro high school district to be worth knowing about.

Recognition, by the numbers

Facts and awards only — we do not rank schools, and you should be wary of any real estate site that does.

Olathe North — marching band took Grand Champion at the Missouri Western competition three years running, Grand Champion at the Kansas Bandmasters Association in 2015, and performed at Carnegie Hall in 2017. Twenty-seven state athletic titles, including eight in football.

Olathe East — U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon School (1997) and National School of Excellence (1998). Fifty-seven state championships, and the KSHSAA record for consecutive state softball titles, set in 2007.

Olathe South — Blue Ribbon / National School of Excellence for 1990–91. Twenty-two state championships across football, softball, baseball, basketball, gymnastics, soccer, bowling, volleyball, golf and cross country.

Olathe Northwest — three orchestras that have performed at the Kennedy Center and EPCOT; speech and debate ranked third in Kansas and twenty-seventh nationally. Seventeen state championships.

The consolidation, and why it affects every Olathe address

On September 3, 2026, district leadership recommended closing five elementary schools — Black Bob, Heritage, Scarborough, Tomahawk and Walnut Grove — and Indian Trail Middle School, at the end of the 2026–27 school year. Roughly 2,200 students would change buildings. The Spanish Immersion program at Black Bob would move to Arbor Creek rather than end.

The part that matters more broadly: closing six buildings means attendance boundaries across the whole district are being redrawn, and that ripples well beyond the six. Boundary development begins in October, proposals go to the board in December, and approval is targeted for January 2027.

So any Olathe address — including one you already own — has schools that are accurate today and provisional for 2027–28. That is true whether or not your current school appears on the list.

The district cites declining enrollment (a peak of 30,216 students in 2019, 28,140 last year, projected just under 26,000 within fifteen years), declining birth rates, budget pressure, and the cost of housing in Olathe. Estimated savings: more than $12 million a year.

A public hearing is scheduled for September 22, 2026 at 5:30 p.m. at Olathe South High School, and the board vote is expected in October. Nothing is final until that vote.

One quirk worth knowing

City limits and school district boundaries do not line up in Johnson County. Canyon Creek sits in the city of Lenexa but is served by Olathe USD 233 — Canyon Creek Elementary is physically in Lenexa and is an Olathe district school. City services and taxes follow Lenexa; school attendance follows USD 233.

It runs the other way too. Every Stonebridge section in south Olathe carries an Olathe mailing address but sits in the Spring Hill School District (USD 230), not Olathe USD 233.

This is the single thing relocating buyers most often get wrong, and it is why we verify the district per address rather than assuming it from the mailing address.

School boundary disclaimer. School attendance boundaries and district assignments change, and Olathe USD 233 is actively redrawing its boundaries on a published schedule. Nothing here should be relied on for a specific property. Confirm assigned schools directly with the school district before making any decision. Programs, academies and awards listed are factual and are not offered as ratings or as a measure of school quality. Last verified September 5, 2026.
