The closures already happened

This is the difference between Lawrence and its neighbors. Olathe is in the middle of a six-school closure plan and Shawnee Mission has a boundary decision scheduled for October. Lawrence took that medicine in March 2023, when the board voted 4–3 to close Pinckney and Broken Arrow elementary schools and restructure Liberty Memorial Central Middle — a package that cut roughly $4 million and about 50 secondary positions. Kennedy Elementary had already become an early childhood center in 2021; Centennial and East Heights closed in earlier rounds. Pinckney’s building now houses Community Connections at Pinckney.

Enrollment for 2025–26 is 10,148 — 9,337 in person, 260 in preschool, 551 in the virtual school — down 2.1% in a year, and down most years since 2018–19. The board’s stated reasons are demographic and financial: Douglas County births fell from 2014 to 2023, 939 seniors walked out after 2024–25 against 635 kindergartners walking in, new construction has skewed toward apartments rather than houses, and board members have named the cost of housing and taxes directly. Preschool is the one line going the other way, up 18.1% to 260, with new classrooms at Woodlawn and Sunflower.

Superintendent Dr. Jeanice Kerr Swift — interim in August 2024, permanent in February 2025 — told the board in November 2025 that there are no pressure points requiring dramatic changes right now. Nothing found since contradicts that. Enrollment is still falling, though, so treat the current attendance map as accurate today and worth confirming before you close.

Two bonds, then nine quiet years

The 2026–27 mill levy is proposed at 52.204 mills, down a hair from 52.345. Because countywide valuations rose about 5%, the district still collects more; a home valued at $325,000 owes roughly $1,779 to the district. Board member Shannon Kimball’s line on going revenue-neutral was blunt: “We can’t afford to be.” Special education is the pressure — the district covered about 40% of that cost locally last year. The budget hearing is September 14, 2026. Separately, the city is weighing cutting school resource officers from four to two; that is a city budget decision, not the district’s.

The boundary quirk — one line, two high schools

Lawrence has exactly one attendance line that most buyers care about, and it is easy to state: the split between the two high schools runs along 15th Street and Bob Billings Parkway. North of it is Free State; south of it is Lawrence High. That is the whole rule, which makes Lawrence refreshingly simple compared with the Johnson County districts where a mailing address tells you nothing.

It came close to changing. A Boundary Advisory Committee met from September 2024 through January 2025 on two options — push the line north of Massachusetts Street into East and North Lawrence, or assign by middle school (Southwest and Billy Mills to Lawrence High, West and Liberty Memorial Central to Free State) — and recommended neither. The enrollment gap that prompted the study closed on its own, from 350 students in 2024–25 to 161 in 2025–26. Anything adopted would not have taken effect before 2026–27, and nothing was.

What the programs actually are

There is no International Baccalaureate program in Lawrence; the district runs a deep Advanced Placement catalog instead — Calculus AB and BC, Statistics, Physics 1 and 2, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science A, English Language and Literature, US History, US Government, Comparative Government, European History, Human Geography, Environmental Science, African American Studies, Music Theory, Studio Art, and Business & Personal Finance. Dual credit comes from two directions: Baker University courses taught in the high schools, and the Jayhawk Blueprint concurrent-credit partnership with the University of Kansas — a genuine perk of living in a college town. Graduation takes 23 credits for the class of 2027 and 24 credits from the class of 2028 on, with Communications, STEM and Financial Literacy added.

The Lawrence College & Career Center at 2910 Haskell Avenue serves juniors and seniors and shares a campus with Peaslee Tech, with college credit and free-tuition opportunities. Four pathway clusters: Health Science and Biomedicine (CNA, CMA, EMT, forensic science, biotechnology); Business and Technology (computer science, cybersecurity, programming, web design); Design, Production and Repair (automotive, welding, HVAC); and Hospitality and Tourism (culinary, event planning). Lawrence Virtual School at 110 McDonald Drive runs K–12 in three academies and enrolled 551 students this year.

The two high schools — recognition

Facts and awards only. We do not rank schools.

• Lawrence High School (1901 Louisiana St) — traces to 1857, making it one of the oldest public high schools in Kansas; current building 1954, stadium 2009, major remodel completed 2021. Enrollment 1,460 in 2025–26.
• Lawrence Free State High School (4700 Overland Dr) — opened 1997 to relieve crowding at Lawrence High. Enrollment 1,621 in 2025–26. State speech champion in 2024 and again in 2025, a season sweep and a sixth straight title; debate won the 2022 Tournament of Champions; fine arts received the KSHSAA Performing Arts School of Excellence award for 2019–20.
• New York Elementary — the first public Montessori program in Kansas.

Both high schools carry long athletic histories; we are leaving the state-title counts off this page until we can verify them against KSHSAA rather than a secondary source.

Special services

The district provides special education for ages 3 to 21 and gifted services K–12, delivered through IEPs in the least restrictive environment, with speech-language, occupational and physical therapy, psychology, social work and school health support. Kennedy Early Childhood Center at 2105 Harper Street covers birth to five: early childhood special education for ages three to five using a transdisciplinary team with center-based, home and community service; free monthly developmental screenings; Pre-K; an inclusive Peer Model Program; and Parents as Teachers from prenatal to five. Infant-toddler services run through Douglas County. C-Tran, the community transition program for ages 18–21, operates at Community Connections at Pinckney — independent living, functional academics, vocational training, work experience and exit planning. The district also runs AVID, ESOL and multilingual services, and Native American Student Services.

Stated as what the district provides. Whether a particular service fits a particular child is a conversation for the district’s special education office.

Where the district actually reaches

USD 497 was organized in 1965 and covers most of the city of Lawrence plus Clinton, Pleasant Grove and the surrounding rural and unincorporated areas. Most of it sits in Douglas County, with small portions crossing into Leavenworth and Jefferson counties. It is the seventh-largest district in Kansas: 11 elementaries, four middle schools, two high schools, the virtual school, the College & Career Center, Kennedy, and transition services, with roughly 1,600 employees.

Douglas County is not one district. Lawrence shares seams with Eudora USD 491 to the northeast, Baldwin City USD 348 to the south, Perry-Lecompton USD 343 to the northwest, and out at the county edges Shawnee Heights USD 450, Wellsville USD 289, Santa Fe Trail USD 434 and West Franklin USD 287. A Lawrence mailing address on the county’s outer ring is not proof of a Lawrence school. Confirm a specific address with the district’s Enrollment Center rather than inferring from city limits.

Moving here for 2026–27

• Calendar — transition half-day for kindergarten, 6th and 9th on Wednesday, August 12, 2026; first full day Thursday, August 13; early childhood starts August 18. Fall break November 23–27, winter break December 18 to January 4, spring break March 12–19. Indigenous Peoples Day, October 12, is a no-school day.
• Phones — a bell-to-bell personal device ban took effect this year under the new state law, approved August 10, 2026. No phones, tablets, smartwatches or wireless earbuds during the school day, with exceptions for documented medical need, an IEP or a 504.
• Buses — Durham School Services took over transportation in August 2026, and families reported service problems in the first week. Worth asking about if your route matters.
• Meals — elementary breakfast $2.20 and lunch $3.25; high school breakfast $2.35 and lunch $3.50.
• New this year — the expanded Langston Hughes Elementary at 1101 George Williams Way, west Lawrence, capacity up from about 550 to about 700; and the Choice Campus at Centennial, 2145 Louisiana Street, a flexible high school pathway with facilitator-built schedules that opened applications July 8, 2026.
