Living in Fontana

Fontana history, jobs and parks

A little history

Captain David Martin, a War of 1812 veteran, received a 160-acre land grant here, and in 1869 J.B. Grinnell bought 120 acres of it and laid out the town along the railroad right-of-way. The new town replaced Old Fontana, a crossroads settlement about half a mile west that was platted around 1858; the name comes from the French ‘fontaine,’ after a spring near the townsite. Fontana was incorporated in 1889 and had about 300 residents in 1910, with general stores, a lumber yard, a grain dealer and a small mill on the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad.

Where people work

Fontana’s local economy has long been farm-based, built around the Fontana Co-Op grain elevator, which was destroyed by a lightning-sparked fire in May 2024. With few employers in town, most working residents commute to nearby towns such as Paola, the county seat about 10 miles north, or farther into the Kansas City metro area.

Parks & outdoors

The Fontana City Park hosts community events such as the fall Trunk or Treat, and new tables and benches were installed there in 2025. The city’s Parks and Rec committee also runs seasonal events, including a 2026 community picnic for the nation’s 250th anniversary.

City rules

Can I do that in Fontana?

The questions buyers ask before the fence goes up, from Fontana code, permit pages and local reporting. Rules change and HOA covenants can be stricter, so confirm with the city before you build.

Trash & recycling

Trash service is billed with city water and sewer. In December 2025 the council approved a new Waste Management contract and stated trash rates stay at $21 per month for 2026. The city holds spring cleanup dumpster days, and earlier minutes note tires are not allowed in the dumpsters.

Fireworks

City council minutes cite Ordinance #120: fireworks may be set off July 1 through July 6, until midnight each night. In 2024 the council discussed amending it to bar bottle rockets, New Year’s fireworks and use during a drought or burn ban, but the minutes do not show that change was adopted.

Source: fontanaks.gov →

RV & boat parking

Ordinance #232, read at the January 2023 council meeting, allows temporary use of a recreational vehicle for living in for no more than 90 days per calendar year. The council said it would not grant exceptions. Separately, minutes say owners get a registered letter and 14 days to remove junk vehicles, boats or debris.

Pets

Council minutes state Fontana has a leash law, and an ordinance bars dogs from running loose. The city has no dog catcher of its own. These notes come from 2022 minutes, so confirm current rules with City Hall.

Source: fontanaks.gov →

Building permits

The council has directed that tiny homes follow Miami County code, and minutes note the zoning ordinance was adopted through Miami County in 1992. In spring 2026, new tiny-home, nuisance and lighting ordinances were still being drafted by the city attorney, so check with City Hall before starting a project.

Source: fontanaks.gov →

Livestock

Per council minutes, March 2024, the council set a limit of 1 hoofed animal per 5 acres. Per council minutes, April and May 2026, a request to pasture cattle went through a conditional use permit, with the council setting a maximum of 10 cows and a 3-year limit for that request.

Source: fontanaks.gov →

Sewer connections

Fontana provides city sewer, and new connections need a water and sewer permit from the city; per council minutes, July 2023, Miami County will not issue an occupancy permit until the owner has a sewer permit from the City of Fontana. Per council minutes, August 2023, a new connection paid a $5,000 sewer fee, and per April 2023 minutes, a water meter may serve only one location.
