Living in Easton

Easton history, jobs and parks

A little history

Easton was laid out in the fall of 1854 and was first called Eastin, after General L.J. Eastin, editor of the Leavenworth Weekly Herald. Territorial Governor Andrew Reeder urged that it be renamed Easton, after his hometown of Easton, Pennsylvania, and the post office opened in December 1855 with early settler Andrew J. Dawson as postmaster. The town sat near Dawson’s Ford on the Big Stranger, a crossing of the old Fort Riley Road, and saw some of the earliest political clashes of the Bleeding Kansas era in January 1856. In 1865 it was a stop on the Butterfield Overland Despatch stage line toward Denver, and by 1910 it was a Union Pacific shipping point for the surrounding farms. Easton was incorporated as a city in 1903.

Where people work

Easton is a small town, so most residents commute to jobs elsewhere in Leavenworth County and the greater Kansas City area. Local employers include Easton USD 449 and Martin Marietta’s Easton Quarry on 231st Street, which produces aggregates.
