District news
What’s new in USD 232
Pulled from district announcements. One pattern worth knowing: like most of Johnson County, the district is now planning around fewer students than it expected a year ago.
Enrollment comes in lower than planned
The district’s official fall count is 7,201 students, down 149 from last year, after budgeting for growth of about 25. If enrollment doesn’t rebound, USD 232 estimates a gap of about $2 million in unrestricted funds for 2027–28 and has started a months-long Strategic Resource Allocation Review, beginning with operational efficiencies. No cost-cutting decisions have been made.
2027–28 school calendar approved
The Board of Education approved next year’s calendar, so you can plan a move around the first day of school well in advance.
TORCH Award staff recognition
Four staff members were recognized with the district’s monthly TORCH Award.
Voters approve a $99.85 million bond
The bond was structured to keep the bond levy at 15.366 mills, so it passed with no tax rate increase. The breakdown is below.
The 2026 bond
What $99.85 million buys
Approved March 3, 2026, with the bond levy held at 15.366 mills, its lowest in more than thirty years. Storm shelters at every middle school is not a small thing in Kansas.
Storm shelters at every middle school, key-card access on all exterior doors and elementary playground security fencing.
Career and technical education (CTEC/CAPS) expansion, early childhood expansion to shorten the waitlist and orchestra facilities at the secondary schools.
A secondary special education facility, middle school additions and elementary classroom additions.

Programs and facts
Worth knowing
Facts and awards only. We do not rank or rate schools.
- Two high schools, De Soto High and Mill Valley High, share a dedicated Career and Technical Education Center that the 2026 bond is expanding.

- The rivals collaborate, too: students from both high schools spent two years designing a traffic sculpture that now stands in Shawnee.
- Special Services covers the IEP process, Child Find and referrals, early childhood special education at Cedar Trails Exploration Center, and gifted services. Questions about a specific child’s needs belong with the district’s Special Services office.
